Welcome to West Union

We welcome you to stop and see the many wonderful facilities and opportunities this community has to offer. In the last few years the citizens have joined together to finance a new aquatic center, library, fine arts addition to the high school, 40 acre recreation complex, and improvements to the hospital. West Union was selected as a Main Street Iowa community in 2006 and the honor has generated incentives for numerous facelifts to downtown businesses including our insurance/real estate office, new informative classes for merchants, and fun promotional activities. West Union may serve as a hub for your recreational needs with trout and bass fishing, golf, hiking, bowling, horseback riding, and biking available. The dining options in the area are well-kept secrets so please feel free to contact our office for details on how to find super steaks, cold-water lobster, the famous Gunder Burger, the terrific Barney Burger, and more! During a day trip you may enjoy viewing the many barn quilts in Fayette County. They are all on hard-surfaced roads and we have maps available.

Fine Arts Center

The fine arts addition to the high school was completed in 2007. With just under 600 seats, the facility will be used for musical and other events by the various schools in the district along with special events hosted by the North Fayette school district and outside organizations.

Jensen Trail

This beautiful walking trail runs along a former railway bed with views of the Otter Creek bluffs and meandering trout stream. The 2-2 1/2 mile trail is enjoyed by folks of all ages who enjoy hiking, cross country skiing, and bicycling. Located just a few miles southeast of West Union, the path adjoins Echo Valley State Park. It is one of Fayette County's newest gems.

Recreation Center

The West Union Recreation Foundation provides a wonderful 40 acre site just north of the high school. Maintained entirely with volunteer labor, the facility offers the shelter house pictured above for picnics, a large set of playground equipment, paved walking paths which tour around a pond and two small lakes, and multiple ballfields. The complex has become the site of choice for family reunions and a variety of social gatherings.
